Grading the Mets Trade Deadline

With the MLB Trade Deadline being nearly 24 hours in the rearview mirror and an egregious monsoon of a thunderstorm interfering with my afternoon walk I figured this as good a time as ever to reflect on the moves of the past few days. The Mets, as listeners of our podcast probably know, are in a “transitional year” of sorts. That didn’t stop David Stearns from buying, even if it was slightly, at the deadline.

Acquiring a bountiful bulk of bullpen arms to go along with a starter and outfielder that could pass as Revolutionary War reenactors, my favorite team got better. Not much better, but better. I’m not going to sit here and parade around like I did in 2015 when they absolutely went to WORK at the deadline, but I will say I am pleasently happy with what the Mets look like heading into the rest of the season.

It’s also important to remember this team has the best record in the major leagues since early June. The Gay, Grimace, OMG, Wiener, Mets have climbed from 17.5 games back in the division to 8 with just under two months left to play. The Phillies, who have “dominated” the Mets by winning 4 games in 6 tries against them this season, have to face off against the hottest team in baseball 7 more times before the regular season concludes.

The additions of Phil Maton, Ryne Stanek, Jesse Winker, Paul Blackburn, Tyler Zuber, and Huascar Brazoban, fill the needs that aformentioned hottest team in baseball had. Now those holes are plugged. Huascar Brazoban is fun to say, Paul Blackburn will have a whiskey named after him by seasons end, the names Tyler Zuber and Phil Maton have middle-aged white guy with a 2.50 ERA written all over them, and Jesse Winker has killed the Mets enough he owes Queens a few bombs.

I’m excited. I haven’t been this excited about my favorite team since the first half of 2022. Something in Queens is changing. David Sterns is driving the boat and no one, not even Kodak Black, is going to let it veer in the wrong direction. Paul Blackb[eard], Jesse Winker, and the island of misfit bullpen arms are coming to rain on whatever kind of “Red October” parade the Phillies are planning this fall.

This trade deadline gets a B+ from me. After seeing the haul, or lack thereof, the Tigers received from the Dodgers for Jack Flaherty I would’ve loved to part with a top 10 prospect and a bag of peanuts for an elite starter, but maybe Jose Butto becomes that now. However you want to put it, I’m going to enjoy the next few months before everything predictably comes crashing down.
