I’m surprised it has taken me this long to start typing away regarding the current state of the Mets right now, but honestly I’m still lost for words for the most part. Since throwing out the first pitch a week ago, Grimace has transformed the Mets from the stereotypical “LOLMets” to America’s team. I referred to the legend of Grimace vaulting my favorite team into relevancy on our podcast a few days ago fully expecting my mentioning of the topic to ruin the streak and send me back into the perilously pessimistic prison of being a Mets fan.
That didn’t happen though. In fact, the opposite did. New York scored 14 runs in a win over the defending champion Rangers, and staff member Zach Meyers pick to win Cy Young, Jon Gray last night. Francisco Lindor and the guys buried the Texas staff with single after single, deploying a “death by paper cut” hitting approach that was the Mets undoing in the 2015 World Series. Every single, whether hit by the aforementioned $300 Million Dollar Man, or Luis Torrens, who I found out existed a few week’s ago, was followed by some “slap” celebration I won’t try to uncover the meaning of.
My point is, for a very brief period in history, I’m enjoying being a Mets fan. The rallying cry of Grimace throwing out the first pitch has been embraced by fans and players alike. The guys are playing a brand of baseball we haven’t seen since Jose Reyes and David Wright were posing for “GQ” photoshoots. In other words, the guys are having fun. When the product on the field is fun, the fans, up in Section 400 and on social media, have fun too. It’s a pretty simple concept to comprehend.
Unless your WFAN host Sal Lacata.
I’ve had my complaints about the state of WFAN in 2024 on previous blogs so I’ll save my criticisms about Lacata’s ability to host a once great daytime slot on the back burner for now. What I can call him a moron for is his whole “take” – quotes because it is barely a take – about the Mets win streak. I’ll summarize a long, at times excruciatingly boring, soliloquy, by just saying this dude hates fun. In what world is it a bad thing to celebrate the win streak by appointing a fictional McDonald’s character as its face. That is not devaluing the strides the actual players have made on the field to become a better ball club. That isn’t “spitting in the face” of the Mets who have played good ball to allow this win streak to happen.
ALL WE ARE DOING IS HAVING FUN WITH A STUPID STORYLINE SAL. I don’t understand how a man employed to talk about sports can be so tone def. Maybe it’s just the generational gap of how people consume sports media. It’s not that serious Sal. Go up in Section 400, have a drink, talk some ball, and let off some steam. I bet you’ll be coming into work in all purple the next day. I know I’ll be.
