Instant Reaction: Mets sign Jackie Bradley Jr.

You know how sometimes you’ll be watching a game with your buddies on a Friday night and someone will hungrily bring up the fact they want some burgers, just for the game to go to commercial break to the tune of “Whopper, Whopper, Whopper, Whopper”? Well that happened today in an extended, albeit valid, fashion.

In a world without football our podcasts here in Section 400 have gone off the deep end at points throughout the summer. Twice in as many weeks, those turbulent tangents have led us to 1) debating whether the Atlantic League, and independent leagues like it, should be considered professional baseball and 2) Randall Cobb’s half-hearted “retirement” sparking a conversation regarding players falling off the face of the earth but refusing to call their respective careers quits.

That brings us to today, when I found out that Jackie Bradley Jr was 1) somehow not retired and 2) playing professional baseball in the Atlantic League for the Long Island Ducks and 3) signing a contract with my favorite team. I’m not saying David Sterns and Carlos Mendoza were binge watching the Views from Section 400 podcast (which you can by clicking here) while they were stuck on the tarmac in Miami until the early hours of the morning, but I am suggesting this world is a funny place.

As for the actual signing of Bradley I don’t hate it. A defensive wizard, Bradley is still somehow only 34 years old. Maybe he has some hits left in him after hitting .400 over 189 plate appearances in Long Island. The more likely case is those numbers are inflated and he still can’t hit a lick, but hey, maybe the South Carolina alum has some Game left in the, never mind.

Bad puns, and jokes, aside this is a depth signing that gives the Mets a FOURTH above average center fielder that can play all three outfield positions. With Tyrone Taylor falling off a cliff and Harrison Bader failing to get a big hit since the SNY broadcast flashed a “Late & Close” graphic to show how well he’s been in the clutch this season, the dart throw at JBJ seems like a solid gamble.

If anything the dude seems like a great vibes guy that could fit right into this Grimace, Latino Pop, Friendship, sign holding roller coaster ride of a season.
