Montez Sweat, Bears, agree to extension

The Chicago Bears and newly acquired defensive end Montez Sweat agreed to a 4-year, $98 million contract extension on Saturday, per Ian Rapoport on NFL Network.

The deal is welcome news for Bears fans after they traded away a second-round pick for Sweat at last week’s NFL trade deadline.

This move not only keeps the talented end in Chicago until 2027, but it drastically improves the outlook of a Bears team that has a chance to draft either Drake Maye or Caleb Williams in the upcoming NFL Draft.

Sweat was arguably Washington’s best defensive player since he arrived in the nation’s capital in 2019, collecting 35.5 sacks, 197 tackles, and 1 interception.

This move makes the Bears better, but they’ll have to do much more if they hope to compete in 2024, as the team has holes at pretty much every position including quarterback.

If I’m Chicago, I’m drafting a quarterback and trading my other first round pick (they have the Panthers first rounder this year) for more capital in either the second or third round. This team is very young and has the chance to build a contender in an up-for-grabs NFC North with a solid draft and free agency.

This signing by general manager Ryan Poles was a step in the right direction, but the Bears still have plenty of work to do in order to compete next year.
