Falcons head coach Arthur Smith has made a change at the helm.
Second-year quarterback Desmond Ridder has been benched in favor of veteran Taylor Heinicke. Heinicke threw for 175 yards and 1 touchdown in relief of Ridder last week, which was apparently enough for Arthur Smith to make a change.
Heinicke has been a spark plug throughout his 6-year career, showing the ability to electrify an offense and win games with a “Rambo-like” gunslinger mentality. Unfortunately, it is that mentality that tends to make teams move on from him as well.
For now, this is the right move for Smith and the Falcons. This team has the ability to compete for a playoff spot in a dumpster fire of a division, and Heinicke gives them the best chance to do that.
He’ll have an immediate chance to make an impact with a win, as the Commanders have a friendly draw this week against rookie Jaren Hall in his first career start for the Minnesota Vikings.
We’ve seen the veteran do it before in his time with Washington, and until he proves me wrong, I believe he can do it again.
As for Desmond Ridder, get ready to learn Canadian budd(eh)y.
