I really hate making blogs making fun of things as insignificant as hats, but today’s announcement by Major League Baseball calls for some unpacking. The hats revealed by New Era and MLB today nearly gave me a corneal abrasion. I apologize for not knowing – and being too lazy to look up- when baseball changed the dress code for the “Mid-Summer Classic” to All-Star jerseys, but you’d think that change would compel the league to put some real time, effort, and resources into making jerseys that connect with the younger generations they are so desperately trying to attract. Instead, baseball spilled a tide pod on a creamsicle and threw up these things.
The flat brimmed style of each hat is currently being sold for a reasonable price of $47 on the market. Selling a type of hat that hasn’t been in style since the Obama Administration for an unreasonable price in Joe Biden’s America is about as on brand as you can get for a league where 90% of decision makers are old enough to have lived during the Eisenhower Administration. This league is a sinking ship. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg . Unless my bad vision has taken a turn for the worst, I’m fairly certain the Texas Rangers, who are hosting All Star Weekend, main color scheme consists of red, navy blue, and white.
Add to that the fact there is ZERO cohesion between the National League “black, blue, and stripe of orange” and the American League’s “tide pod creamsicle” garb and it’s just a complete disaster. I have the fashion sense of a 6 year old squirrel and I know these stink. These hats are so bad I honestly think the people in charge of making them asked their children what colors they like the most and this is what came out. What in the world are we doing?
I just applauded Rob Manfred on our last podcast for finally getting the instant replay challenge system to AAA. I wanted to write a blog today about how well run of an event the Rickwood Field game was on Thursday. Instead, I am stuck here annoyed at myself for getting mad over the apparel worn by players on a baseball field for the seventy-second time this season.
Update: After looking through Twitter comments public perception of these things seems to be positive. Either I’m an old man yelling at a cloud or our country is doomed. There is no in between.
