The New York Mets name Carlos Mendoza next manager

On Monday, the New York Mets reportedly signed Yankees bench coach Carlos Mendoza to a deal to be their next manager.

I have one question and one question only…. is this a sick joke?!

I was ecstatic when the Mets hired David Sterns to be their VP of Baseball Operations, not only because of Sterns’ prowess and Mets ties but also because I thought former Brewers manager Craig Counsell would be coming with him.

I also figured if the Mets couldn’t sway Counsell to Queens they’d end up with Carlos Beltran (who they should have hired instead of Luis Rojas back in 2020) or a young, up-and-coming baseball mind that hasn’t gotten a shot to shine yet.

Instead, Sterns and owner Steve Cohen decided it would be a fantastic idea to hire the bench coach from “older brother” across the street.

Listen, Carlos Mendoza is probably a great person and a great baseball mind, but it simply floors me that a team that is insistent on making better decisions just hired the bench coach of one of the most underperforming teams in this decade.

Not only are the Yankees consistently falling below expectations, but fans and the baseball world have been blasting the front office for the new “analytical” type approach to things, which basically limits manager Aaron Boone’s ability to make decisions outside of the numbers.

Now, riddle me this. How many decisions can the coach ranked under Boone actually even make if Boone himself has trouble making any in the first place. Steve Cohen has made it clear the Mets want to shift towards an analytical approach, and maybe Mendoza is the guy to do that. I’m just worried the Mets are becoming the new Yankees, where the goal should be to become the Yankees of old.

In a season where my football teams have been horrific, I didn’t need the Mets ruining my day.
