Views from 400’s Week 6 Thursday Night Football Roundtable

Every Thursday, the guys from Section 400 are here to answer the biggest questions heading into the Thursday Night Football game.

In this week’s roundtable, the guys talk Patrick Mahomes, Russell Wilson, best bets, the Chiefs Super Bowl chances, and more.

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs haven’t looked like their dominant selves so far this season, but still sit atop the AFC with a 4-1 record. Is Kansas City a Super Bowl contender yet again?

BH: Remember last year when talking heads said to watch out for the Raiders and the Chargers in the AFC West? The Chiefs have won this division seven consecutive times and they’ll make it eight this year.

Mahomes and Kansas City will again only need two wins to make it to another Super Bowl.

JA: The Chiefs treat the regular season like contenders in the NBA. Much like the old Tom Brady Patriots teams, they could go out and win every game by 30-40 but they don’t care until the postseason.

With Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes, and all of their experience, they are yet again the AFC favorites.

MK: This is not a serious question. I think as long as Mahomes is the QB, the Chiefs are always in contention for a Super Bowl run.

For the second year in a row, the Denver Broncos have brought in a new coach and are off to a pathetic start. How much of the blame do you place on Russell Wilson?

BH: More like Mr. Unlimited losses. Russell Wilson hasn’t been terrible this season, but he’s clearly not good enough to carry a team in the league. He’s playing himself out of the “Hall of Fame” discussion every passing week.

JA: He definitely takes some of the blame. Wilson came into a new organization and has had multiple coaches in two years. That’s not easy, but there’s still a large degree of blame on the veteran signal-caller.

As a championship-winning quarterback, he needs to step up or step down, he’s not doing Denver any favors.

MK: Wilson just doesn’t seem to be the same as we once saw in Seattle. He doesn’t have great talent around him, but he certainly could be winning more games.

If you put a Patrick Mahomes or Jalen Hurts in the Denver offense it’d probably be a different story.

I won’t put all the blame on Wilson but in a QB-driven league, I’d say more than 50% is on him.

Kansas City has struggled to find consistent production from the wide receiver position since the departure of Tyreek Hill. Between Skyy Moore, Rashee Rice, Karadius Toney, and Justyn Ross, who do you see stepping up as the season progresses?

BH: It’s between Rashee Rice and Justyn Ross for me, but I’ll lean Ross. The second-year man out of Clemson barely played until last week, but saw 4 targets against the Vikings. I think he plays more and becomes a favorite target of Mahomes.

JA: Watching the chiefs through 5 weeks it’s pretty clear that Rashee Rice is emerging as the favorite here. I don’t think we see any real alpha receivers develop, but I like Rice being this team’s WR1.

There have been multiple plays this season where Mahomes has looked for Rice as a first-read on 3rd down and in the Redzone. The two are developing some trust.

MK: If Kadarius Toney could catch the ball he would be very dynamic but as we’ve seen that has been a major issue. I think we could see Rashee Rice rise up as a dynamic weapon for Mahomes.

Favorite bet on this gross TNF game?

BH: I like Russell Wilson over 217.5 passing yards. It’s gross but either he plays great and the Broncos keep this thing close or the Chiefs blow ’em out and he hits this number by throwing the ball 89 times.

JA: Chiefs over 29.5 points. This will be a massacre.

MK: I’m with Jack, give Pacheco to find the end zone, Mahomes over 272.5 passing yards, and the Chiefs -11.5.

Bad Blood.

These two division rivals do not like each other one bit. Who gets the dub tonight?

BH: The Broncos stink. Chiefs in a route, 37-20.

JA: This game will not be close. Chiefs move to 5-1, winning 35-10.

MK: 38-13 Kansas City.
