A slightly “run-of-the-mill” NBA Playoffs first round got a tad more compelling on Tuesday night, with both the Dallas Mavericks and Indiana Pacers relying on sizable contributions from their young stars to garner victories. Jason Kidd’s Mavericks are led by 25-year-old Luka Doncic of course, and the slithering Serbian sniper both slithered his way to the rim and sniped some buckets from distance on Tuesday night. Luka finished one assist shy of a double double, racking up a game-high 32 points on 11/26 from the field. Back court mate -and flat earth enthusiast – Kyrie Iriving came out anything but flat, adding 23 points of his own on an impressive 8/18 shooting night. The scoring specialist added 3 steals on the defensive end as well. The performances were enough for Dallas to espcape Los Angeles with a 96-93 win, knotting up the series at 1 a piece.

In the East, Pacers point guard Tyrese Haliburton avenged a Game 1 dud by contributing a 12-point, 12-assist, double double to lead Indiana past the Bucks in Milwaukee. While Haliburton is the Pacers leader, it was trade deadline acquisition Pascal Siakam who stole the show in Tuesday’s 125-108 victory. The Cameroonian finished with a game-high 37 points, 11 rebounds, and 6 assists on a “Antetokounmpo-like” 16/23 mark from the field. The aforementioned Greek Freak sat out again on Tuesday, but reportedly is eyeing a Game 3 return to this series.

Back over in the West, the Timberwolves bested the Suns by double-digits once again to take a commanding 2-0 series lead. Minnesota’s defense proved the difference in an otherwise forgetful game featuring woeful shooting performances from pretty much every noteworthy star in this series. Even Devin Booker – who led the game with 20 points – connecting on just one of his six 3-point field goal attempts. It’s hard to count out a team with as much talent as Phoenix, but a clear lack of vision has plagued this team all season. It might be its downfall in a few short days.

Let’s Talk Hockey, eh

I take full blame for the losses of both Canadian hockey teams in action on Tuesday after my praise of the countries chances to bring the cup “home” in Monday’s newsletter. The Canucks and Jets both lost their second of two opening home games on Tuesday, evening up their respective series a one game each. In the case of the Canucks, Vancouver SHOULD still be fine against an inferior Nashville Predators team (although the Vibes on Broadway will be immaculate when this series heads to Music City) but the Jets should be slighty worried. Our guy Matt picked the Colorado Avalanche to win the Cup for a reason. These guys can score as well as anyone in the league behind Nathan MacKinnon.

In the East, the Panthers and Rangers took commanding 2-0 series leads over the Lightning and Capitals, respectively. While the Lightning can still make a series out of things, the Capitals – who entered the playoffs as the worst team ever (in terms of goal differential) to qualify – stand little to no chance against the President’s Trophy. winning Rangers. It will be worth monitoring to see if veteran Alexander Ovechkin can score what could very well be his final playoff goal.

What else is happening in the nosebleeds?

Trivia

Yesterday’s Answer: Cliff Lee. In a fun wrinkle, the lefty owns the longest scoreless streak in Phillies history with 30 2/3 innings. Suarez can seemingly break the record in his next start if all goes well.

Today’s Question: Who was the first ever first overall draft pick in NFL History?
