What happened last night; November 8

The Auburn Tigers are bad for the heart. Welcome to another edition of “What Happened Last Night”.

I can’t quite tell you why your car is in the front yard, or why you slept with your clothes on, but don’t worry, I’m not gone.

Every single day, the guys from Section 400 will be providing a rundown of everything that happened in the world of sports the night before.

Blown leads, Tigers, and Bears, oh my.

Baylor Athletics

Last night’s marquee game of the night in college basketball, and the sports world really, lived up to the hype as Baylor snuck by my Auburn Tigers 88-82.

Auburn held a 77-74 lead with four minutes to go in the game before the Bears came out of hibernation. Baylor ended the game on a 14-5 run, stunning Bruce Peal and the Tigers in Sioux Falls, ND. (I still have no idea why this game was played in North Dakota)

Big 12 preseason freshmen of the year Ja’Kobe Walter lived up to the second half of his first name, dropping in a game high 28 points on 7/13 from the field and 10/10 from the free stripe.

Five-star freshmen Aden Holloway led the way for Auburn, scoring a team high 19 points off the bench and dropping 6 assists in 27 minutes of play.

It’s a real shame someone had to lose this game, as both teams look like they are built for the second weekend of March.

Rick, Ed, and some more upsets

Kris Craig/The Providence Journal

The NBA didn’t play any games on Tuesday night due to election day. (Figure it out Adam)

That left college basketball to fill the void, and while the matchups weren’t great, we saw some things worth mentioning.

I’ll get the upsets out of the way first. Vanderbilt, who has somehow not been relegated out of the SEC, lost at home to Presbyterian on Tuesday night.

The school that believes in one sovereign God apparently believed in one sovereign win in the non-conference last year. and they’ve already matched that total after one game in 2023-2024.

DePaul also lost its home opener as 12-point favorites to IPFW. The loss was about the 26th worst thing to happen in Chicago yesterday.

New Big East head coaches Rick Pitino (St. Johns) and Ed Cooley (Georgetown) won their debuts on Tuesday. Pitino’s Red Storm took down Stony Brook in a New York showdown, while Ed Cooley’s Hoyas beat Le Moyne College by 37 after I said they would win by 45.

Georgetown -18.5 marks the second straight night I’ve given out a bet that has cashed by 20-points (I gave out JMU +16.5 on Monday) If you aren’t reading the “What to watch for tonight” article every day, you better start now.

Avalanche of goals

Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

This is normally the part of the recap where I would write about some of the football action from the night, but MACtion was so bad I need to put the whole conference in timeout for a week.

The marquee hockey game of the day saw the Colorado Avalanche breeze past the New Jersey devils with a 6-goal barrage.

Sports in the state of Colorado have been on the upswing since the college football team knocked off TCU on Labor Day weekend. Though the Buffaloes have cooled off on the gridiron, the Avalanche, Nuggets, and Lady Buffs are off to great starts to their respective seasons.
