What happened last weekend; December 11

The NFC Playoff Picture is more cloudy than my brain was waking up this morning and seeing snow on the ground for the first time this year.

The six-year-old in me became giddy at the site of a white blanket covering the grass outside, and the same can be said when looking at an NFC Playoff race that has three teams sitting at 10-3 and one at 9-4.

Unfortunately, the 9-4 team is more fraudulent than a recalled Ford Bronco, but more on that later.

Every single weekday, the guys from Section 400 will be providing a rundown of everything that happened in sports the night, or weekend, before.

Let’s get into it.

The Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills met on Sunday afternoon for another chapter of their recent storied rivalry.

Whereas the past few years have seen these two squads at the top of the conference battling it out for a No. 1 seed, this year’s version featured a Buffalo team trying to extend their playoff hopes to another week and an extremely flawed Kansas City team.

One of those extreme flaws came out for the Chiefs with a minute left in the game, when a 50-yard, go-ahead touchdown pass was eradicated because wide receiver Kadarius Toney forget to ask the Line Judge if he was lined up on-side.

This wild play simply resulted in a 5-yard, loss of down penalty. Patrick Mahomes showed visual frustration and could not come back from it, as Kansas City’s drive stalled and Mahomes showed a side of himself not many people, including myself, had seen before.

The multi-time NFL MVP was a sore loser.

Sunk in the shallow end

Week 15 of the College Football season is always taken over by the battle of the military branches, with Army and Navy renewing their rivalry in the season’s final regular season game.

Each rendition “America’s Game” is normally a defense slug-fest filled with Wing-T formations and about 26 tackles from each linebacker.

The 124th meeting happened to be a little more offensively entertaining though, at least in the game’s final quarter.

Army jumped out to an early 10-0 lead and held it heading into the game’s final frame. From there, Navy quarterback Tai Lavatai took the tru spirit of Boston, dinking and “Dunkin'” his way to 179 passing yards and a touchdown to bring Navy a yard away from victory.

Unfortunately for Navy, the game ended on the 1-yard line in a scrum of bodies when they got stopped on a sneak attempt.

The final frames of the sneak attempt embody this storied tradition to a tee.

Lebron James and the Los Angeles Lakers were crowned In-Season Tournament Champions on Friday.

Los Angeles led Tyrese Haliburton and the Indiana Pacers end-to-end in the Championship Game from Vegas, thanks in large part to Anthony Davis becoming the third Laker to ever drop 40/20/5 in a game.

Unfortunately for Davis, his historic night is lost in the dark corners of time because the stats from the game are voided. (Figure it out Adam)

Max Christie, Maxwell Lewis, and a host of Lakers playing on smaller contracts especially enjoyed the victory. Each player on the winning side will receive a $500,000 check from the NBA for their efforts.

Bronny’s Back

Lebron wasn’t the only James in action this weekend.

His son Bronny made his long-awaited debut for the suddenly struggling USC Trojans on Sunday. Although he only contributed 4 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists across 17 minutes in the overtime loss, it was good to see the 18-year-old get back on the floor after his cardiac arrest in the offseason.

The Trojans are now 5-4 in non-conference play and are in dire need of some help. They’ll hope Bronny can provide the spark they need to turn things around in Los Angeles.

Rocky times in Philly.

USATS

The Philadelphia Eagles are in danger.

After a 10-1 start, the Birds have been blown out in back-to-back games by the other two contenders in the NFC.

More importantly, Philadelphia is now in a virtual tie for both the No. 1 seed in the NFC and the NFC East division.

They should be fine thanks to an end of season schedule featuring two games against my horrendous Giants and one more against the Arizona Cardinals, but one slip-up could be detrimental for a team that has been outscored 55-32 in a 14-day span.
