What to watch for tonight; February 13

What’s going on everybody? It’s been a while.

How about that Super Bowl? Patrick Mahomes has 3 rings in 7 seasons in the NFL and 6 as a starting quarterback. I don’t think anyone truly realizes how absurd that is.

Well, maybe they do. I saw a headline on “Get Up” this morning simply asking if Mahomes was already the GOAT. I nearly spit out my coffee until I realized doing so may cause me to go sterile and I kind of want to start a family at some point this decade.

Patrick Mahomes is great, but let’s hold off on the GOAT talk for now. Football is a brutal sport where injuries or bad luck can set you back for years.

Mahomes has been the epitome of health so far throughout his career though, and it could stay that way assuming he stays out of automobiles driven by his father.

Either way football is in the rearview now as we approach baseball season and the meat of the NBA, NCAA, and NHL seasons.

For those in need of a refresher on what you should be looking for, here are the games we are watching tonight.

The best.

USATS
  • (NCAAM) Marquette vs. Butler
  • (NCAAM) Iowa State vs. Cincinnati

Two bubble teams have huge “Quad 1” opportunities tonight in college basketball.

First, the Butler Bulldogs host the fourth-ranked Marquette Golden Eagles at 6:30 Eastern on Fox Sports 1. Butler is on the outside of the bubble in our latest bracketology (which you should go read by the way), while Marquette is currently a 2-seed with an opportunity to host a region.

Butler is all the way down at fifth in the Big East, but a 16-8 overall record with plenty of solid wins have the Bulldogs hanging around in the NET rankings. If they are going to upset Marquette tonight, guards Pierre Brooks, DJ Davis, and Post Alexander need to be aggressive for 40 minutes.

If they can do that, Butler will be back in the “Field of 68”.

Just 30 minutes later a team on the other side of the bubble, Cincinnati, hosts projected 2-seed Iowa State. The Bearcats have had trouble putting together win streaks in an uber-talented Big 12 conference, but tonight provides another chance for them to pick up a quality win.

With a win tonight Cincinnati can feasibly move to 4-5 in Quad 1 with a road contest against a beatable UCF team on Saturday. Two wins would move Cincy well off the bubble.

The best of the rest.

AP Photo
  • (NHL) Red Wings vs. Oilers
  • (NBA) Kings vs. Suns

A couple of late night affairs round out the best of the rest category tonight.

Connor McDavid’s Edmonton Oilers have lost once in what seems like 3 months while the Red Wings have also been super impressive this season. Edmonton is heavily favored at home, but at this point they have to be due for a loss right?

Detroit deserves a victory after that brutal end to the NFL season.

On the hardwood, a pair of playoff teams out West go to battle on TNT. All the stars should be healthy tonight with All-Star weekend looming so expect a fun, intense battle in what could be the 4-5 or 3-6 first round matchup in the postseason.

The rest.

Nevada Athletics

(NCAAM) New Mexico vs. Nevada

I may as well rename this category “Brian’s favorite CBB bet” because that is really what it has become. Nevada plays host to New Mexico tonight as slight favorites, and it’s hard for me to not suggest slamming the Wolf Pack to cover the (-1.5) number in this spot.

The Mountain West is deep and talented this season which has led to competitve games with the home team coming out on top more often than not.

I’m sticking with the trend tonight, especially considering Nevada has been playing great basketball lately with wins @ Utah State and at home vs. San Diego State.
