What to watch for tonight; January 11

A lot of Nyquil and one grueling workout at the gym later, we’re finally over this head cold. We’ll see how the podcast goes tonight.

If it seems like the content over here has been lacking since our 12 Days of Bowlmas, we do apologize. The recent live shows and general business that comes with the flip of the calendar have caused some chaos.

That being said, we have some fun things planned here at Section 400 and return to a normal schedule next week.

Until then, we’ll have a long podcast discussing all the winter sports headlines and the upcoming NFL Slate this Saturday.

You are here for our preview of the sports slate tonight and my favorite college basketball bet of the day though, so we’ll get right into that.

The best.

(NBA) Celtics vs. Bucks

The elites of the East go at it on the hardwood tonight when the Boston Celtics motor on over to the land of the Harley Davidson Museum to take on the Bucks.

Milwaukee has played more like a ’95 Triumph than a fresh new Harley as of late, as the Deer come in losers of 4/5. Their lone victory was a 4-point win over a Spurs team with 5 wins on the season.

As for the Celtics, Boston is once again an NBA Finals favorite thanks to MVP-level play from Jayson Tatum and an All-Star supporting cast featuring Jaylen Brown, Kristaps Porzingis, Jrue Holiday, and Al Horford.

Spell check just told me I spelled 3 of those names wrong. It might be time for WordPress to update its software.

I almost completely forgot to roast Adam Silver for his handling of the Paris game again. The Cavaliers played the Nets today at 2 PM eastern time on a Thursday. I understand the game is in primetime for the fans at the venue and its ultimately for their entertainment, but for the love of god Adam.

This is literally the perfect opportunity to have a late-afternoon matinee Paris game on Saturday or Sunday that would work in the same American time-slot as a Premier League weekend game would on a normal weekend.

The ratings would be good for any live basketball appetizer taking place before sports fans sit down for a full day of playoff football. This isn’t a hard concept to understand. You’re schedule makes no sense anyway so it’s not like it was a logistical issue.

The best of the rest.

USATS
  • (NCAAB) Michigan State vs. Illinois
  • (NCAAB) FAU vs. Tulane

We haven’t talked about Michigan State basketball on this platform since the begginning of the season. There is a reason for that.

Tom Izzo’s Spartans are just 9-6 this season and 1-1 in the Big 10. This experienced team that was ranked so highly in the preseason polls is trending towards the bubble, but they do have a chance to pick up a massive road win tonight against No. 10 Illinois.

MSU is still led by guard Tyson Walker and his 20.6 points per contest. The issue for the Spartans is nobody has been able to step up behind him.

On the Illinois side, the Fighting Illini finally looked like they were ready to take the next step in program history before serious allegations were brought up against star guard Terrance Shannon Jr.

Illinois can still be a major player in the Big 10 without their star, but the Fighting Illini won’t be making a Final Four without him.

In the AAC, a struggling Florida Atlantic team travels to NOLA to take on Tulane.

FAU has yet to find its footing in their new conference, but their talent and experience should be enough to keep them afloat until they figure it out. Don’t be surprised if they struggle again against a Green Wave team featuring five players averaging at least 13 points.

Forward Kevin Cross is the key Tulane player to watch tonight. FAU could have issues handling his size.

(NCAAB/NHL/NBA) Rest of slate

Alright so…. in the college basketball realm you night owls should expect a fun one when Gonzaga travels to Santa Clara. A win for the Broncos could push them towards the right side of the bubble as of right now.

If Gonzaga prevails, we will most likely see the WCC as a one-bid league come March. (Yes this game means that much already).

A couple of other games in the NBA catch our eye with the Knicks taking on the Mavericks and the Suns battling the Lakers in Los Angeles.

The Suns have been better recently and look like the Western Conference favorite they should be.

The NHL features a ton of fun matchups tonight and I advise you to look at the schedule yourself if you are a hockey fan.

As for my favorite college basketball bet of the day, I’m going back to the Tyson Walker prop well. Feel comfortable taking his over 18.5 points or over 20+ points for a better number.

He’ll need to be great tonight if Michigan State has any chance. Considering the Spartans are just 3-point dogs with an over/under of 150.5, I love his line here.
