What to watch for tonight; January 23

I’m gonna say it, the Los Angeles Dodgers are ruining baseball.

Now I know they still will find a way to choke in the end and I shouldn’t be too upset considering the Mets have the second-highest payroll in the sport (which is ridiculous because the team sucks), but Los Angeles has still made a mockery of the MLB offseason.

Besides the Yankees trading for Juan Soto and the Phillies resigning Aaron Nola all the way back in November, the Dodgers have been the only team that has made any sort of substantial move, and they’ve made about 12 of them.

Today Los Angeles signed James Paxton to a one-year deal for $12 million. You’re telling me you couldn’t have done that Steve?!

This is probably the least excited I’ve been for the baseball season since Dillon Gee was announced as the Mets Opening Day starter back in 2013.

Actually that is a lie, I was even less excited when Jon Niese got the call a year later.

Anyway I’m not here to rant about the Mets. I’m here to tell you what games we’ll be watching tonight.

Let’s get right into it.

The best.

Houston Hoops/ X

(NCAAB) Houston vs. BYU

I know a lot of you probably are still in the dark regarding conference re-alignment in college sports. Believe it or not, this matchup between Houston and BYU is a battle of ranked BIG 12 Cougars in Provo, Utah tonight.

Houston comes in as the favorite to win the conference as the fourth-ranked team in the AP Poll.

The Cougars still boast an incredible defense that has led them to a 16-2 record this season. Forward L.J Cryer pairs with guards Emanuel Sharp and Jamal Shead as the main scorers for the Cougs.

On the BYU side, five players average at least 10 points per matchup. Jaxson Robinson leads the way with 14 PPG.

Tonight’s game should come down to how well the Houston big men can take advantage of an inexperienced BYU front court down low. Look for Houston forward J’Wan Roberts to collect about 46 rebounds in this one.

The best of the rest.

(NHL) Lightning vs. Flyers

About half of our audience is from the great, scum-but-lovabale, land of Philadelphia so I feel like I have to give some flowers to the unlikely wagon that is the Philadelphia Flyers.

Our guys Matt caught the game on Saturday against the Avalanche and nearly witnessed an insane comeback. The “Broad Street Bullies” couldn’t quite pull that one off but still sit in fantastic position in the Eastern Conference race and should be a shoe in for the postseason.

I personally can’t wait to see how they manage to flame out of the playoffs.

The rest.

USATS

Rest of sports slate

You know the drill by now. My favorite college basketball bet of the day is the Nebraska Cornhuskers (-4) to win handidly at home against the Ohio State Buckeyes.

This one is fairly straight forward for me. Nebraska is trending in the right direction off the bubble while OSU is dangerously close to losing any kind of case it has to earn an NCAA Tournament bid.

Buckeyes guards Bruce Thornton and Jamison Battle rely heavily on jump shooting to carry the offense. Those shots aren’t going to fall at a high rate tonight against a hostile crowd that has led Nebraska to a 12-0 mark at home this season.

Expect a comfortable 76-65 win to push Nebraska into the projected field of 64.
