Who should be the Giants Quarterback in 2025?

The New York Giants are officially in the quarterback market for the first time since 2019, when they drafted Daniel Jones. As a Giants fan it is very unsettling times and a lot is uncertain, however it feels like that has been the case for the last five years.

With the uncertainty also comes excitement for change.  As the famous phrase goes; “Once you hit rock bottom the only place to go is up.” General manager Joe Schoen has several avenues to address the Giants’ quarterback situation. In this breakdown, I’ll explore the most likely options and share my perspective on the best course of action as a Giants fan.

The Draft

Myself and many Giants fan believe the draft is the most likely option in addressing this hole at quarterback. The Giants currently have the third overall pick and there are two options in Sheduer Sanders and Cam Ward that may be available to them.

Cam Ward

Cam Ward is regarded widely to be the more attractive quarterback out of the two top-end options in this class. He threw for 4,313 yards and 39 touchdowns last season, which was second and first in the country, respectively.

Ward is also is considered to be mobile, rushing for 200-plus yards this past season with Miami. With all this said, if Giants general manager Joe Schoen wants Ward he will likely have to trade with Tennessee for the No. 1 pick.

This is definitely possible, and according to ESPN insider Jordan Reed, would likely cost the No. 3 pick and as well as two third round picks. If the Giants believe Ward is the guy they need, it would not be too much to get rid of.

Sheduer Sanders

The other option, Sheduer Sanders, likely would not require New York to trade up in the draft. It feels as though Sanders has been linked to the Giants all season and this is the most likely route Schoen takes.

Sanders has already had multiple meetings with the Giants, and wore custom Giants themed cleats before his bowl game as well. It is clear that there is a connection between the two parties.

Sanders was widely considered to be one of the top two quarterbacks in college football this season. He threw for 4,134 yards and 37 touchdowns. Both were very impressive, however the negative side to his game is glaring too, as he threw for 10 interceptions and also took 42 sacks – almost double Ward’s total.

Free Agency

Another very possible route for the Giants would be to avoid the quarterbacks in this year’s draft, instead shifting towards finding a bridge quarterback in free agency. Next year’s draft class is much deeper at the quarterback position, meaning it may be worth waiting a year if the confidence in Ward or Sanders is not there.

Jameis Winston

Jameis Winston is a name frequently linked to the Giants in free agency. Now entering his tenth NFL season, Winston offers more value in the locker room than on the field. He’s beloved by teammates, respected by coaches, and always a fan favorite.

While he won’t single-handedly win many games, he brings an undeniable energy and excitement to any team. Coming off a season with the Browns in which he started 12 games, Winston threw for 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, which wasn’t exactly inspiring.

However, Winston brings something the Giants have been missing in recent years—fun. Signing him as a veteran leader and bridge quarterback while setting up for next year’s draft could be a realistic option for the team.

Aaron Rodgers

Unfortunately Aaron Rodgers has been linked to the Giants recently. If you look at solely his statistics from last season, he is coming off a very average year in terms of yards and touchdowns. He threw for 3,897 yards and 28 touchdowns for the Jets.

However he was only able to win five games, turning the ball over 11 times. He is also turning 42 years old this year. Beyond that, he brings plenty of off-field distractions, from skipping training camps to clashing with the media, and at times, he seems more disengaged from football than committed.

For the Giants, this move would feel more like a short-term gamble than a step toward building a sustainable future.

Verdict

After laying out what I believe to be the most likely routes the Giants plan to take, it’s time for what I think. Trading up for Cam Ward would be extremely exciting and is a move I would love. If we do not trade up for him, I hope we pass on Sheduer.

I do not have much faith in Sheduer Sanders being the future of an NFL team. He is not a top-three talent and is succumbed to being in a weak quarterback class where all three teams drafting in the top three need a signal-caller.

If Cam Ward is not available, I would much rather take Sanders’s Colorado teammate, Travis Hunter, and pivot to Jaxson Dart with a later pick.

Travis Hunter is a one of a kind player. He is elite at the cornerback position (which the Giants are extremely weak at), while also being able to provide a spark on offense if he was utilized in that way.

Jaxson Dart is someone who is considered a second round talent who threw 4,279 yards while providing 495 yards on the ground. He is a true dual-threat quarterback who does not turn the ball over, having only six interceptions a season ago.

It is very simple. Draft Hunter assuming he is available, draft Dart, and sign Jameis Winston to teach Dart and help develop him. If Dart clearly does not have it to be a starter then the tank for Arch Manning is underway.
