James Gladstone is taking the Jaguars to the Super Bowl

James Gladstone has officially been introduced as the new general manager of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Unlike Liam Coen, he didn’t deliver a ‘cringey’ “Duval” so this news may go under the national radar.

He was emotional from the start, a true class act thanking everyone along his journey. Family and friends, the Rams organization he’s been with for the past nine years, the Khans, and Jacksonville. Anyone who watched the presser can tell that Gladstone is going to bring his heart and soul to this General Manager role.

When speaking about Jaguars owners Shad and Tony Khan, James said, “Their passion for this city, for this franchise, is contagious”. I think it’s safe to say the Jaguars won’t be leaving Jacksonville anytime soon.

Below are some direct quotes from the press conference today, mixed in with some blind optimism from your favorite Jaguars fan in Section 400.

Roster Evaluation and Draft Day Focus

One of the biggest questions facing any new GM is how they plan on structuring the team. Between the current roster, free agency, potential trades, and the draft, there are tons of key roster decisions to be made in a very short amount of time. Gladstone stressed the importance of building through the draft and player development. Luckily for Jaguars fans, Gladstone and the Rams have had a good track record with draft day picks, most notably last year’s Defensive Rookie of the Year, Jared Verse.

“The draft is the lifeblood of any great organization. We will be relentless in our scouting and development efforts to ensure we’re bringing in the right talent and coaching them up to reach their full potential.”

When asked what excites him most about this team Gladstone said,

“There’s talent in a lot of key spots and with the amount of draft capital that we have at our disposal over the next two seasons it’s really exciting about what we can do there, especially knowing that we have the most picks in the NFL over the next two years.”

He’s obviously talking about guys like Trevor Lawrence, Brian Thomas Jr., Travon Walker, and Josh Hines-Allen. The cornerstones of this team.

Liam Coen, The Next Sean McVay

Gladstone and Coen worked together in Los Angeles with Sean McVay’s Rams for four seasons. They clearly bring a strong chemistry and shared vision to their new roles in Jacksonville. Talking about his experience with the Los Angeles Rams, Gladstone noted parallels between Jacksonville’s current situation and the Rams’ turnaround once they hired Sean McVay.

“When I joined the Rams, we were coming off a four-win season. There was a lot of work to be done. But with the right leadership, the right vision, and a commitment to doing things the right way, we turned it around. I see that same opportunity here.”

Liam Coen becoming the next Sean McVay would justify Buccaneers fans’ dramatic reactions to his recent departure as their OC. Time will tell if he can live up to the title, but as a Jaguars fan, I’m thrilled to have a McVay disciple lead our team.

Final Thoughts

James Gladstone’s first press conference set the tone for what fans can expect: a transparent approach with an emphasis on building an “intangibly rich” culture, alongside a strong partnership with Liam Coen and Tony Boselli.

We haven’t seen the Gladstone/Coen/Boselli era kickoff in Jacksonville yet, but there’s a new sense of optimism with this team. The ‘Big 3’ in Duval County have shown a level of dedication to this city and organization that’s been unmatched by any front office or coach thus far.

At the end of his opening monologue, the closing remarks were directed at the fans,

“To the Jaguar fanbase, I turn to you. With Liam’s vision, with a disciplined approach, we’re going to bring you a product that you all can be proud of, and we are so appreciative of your support. With that, game on!”

Game on, James.
