Why can’t I have nice things? It was literally 10 hours ago I was making jokes about Kodai Senga having arm fatigue because of a lack of entertaining things to do in Port Saint Lucie. Now he has been diagnosed with a “moderate capsule strain” in his right shoulder.
First of all, that injury sounds like something that would happen to a rocket ship in a parody of an outer space movie. Secondly, how does this happen two days into spring? And thirdly, WHY IS METS BRASS HAPPY WITH THE DEPTH THEY HAVE INSIDE THE ORGANIZATION?
This is an actual quote I read from beat reporter Anthony Dicomo’s newsletter the other day.
“Mets officials are proud of the rotation depth group they have assembled, including Joey Lucchesi, José Butto and Max Kranick. Prospects Mike Vasil, Christian Scott and Dominic Hamel are also edging closer to the Majors.”
The only bigger slap in the face to fans than Senga’s injury is that sentiment right there. Good grief.
In a market where Blake Snell, Jordan Montgomery, Hin Jin Ryu (who was just forced to sign in the KBO), Michael Lorezen, Mike Clevinger…
*I can keep going
Rich Hill, Matthew Boyd, Brad Keller, Johnny Cueto, and even old friend Noah Syndergaard (who is more like Act 1 of Endgame Thor than Infinity War Thor at this point in his career) are all available, the Mets are going to roll the dice with a guy who throws something called a churve and another guy who I started in fantasy baseball as a joke at the end of last season.
I don’t even know who Max Kranick is, and while that may be a shot at my fandom, I don’t particuarly care to learn who he is.
I’ve been hearing about Mike Vasil as a solid prospect since Juan Lagares was manning center field in Citi so he can be written off, and I do like what I’ve read about Christian Scott but knowing the Mets he’ll spend the year in Syracuse (at least it’s not Vegas anymore) until it’s too late to bring him up.
Either way this news sucks for Senga, for Mets fans, and for me. I already had tempered expectations this year but I’m quickly becoming a living embodiment of the protest meme regarding expectations being low.
Holy fuck we’re in for a long season in Queens.
