What happened last night; December 21

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Bowlmas season is upon us, baby.

If you haven’t already, be sure to check out Episode 1 featuring our friend and James Madison alumni Dylan as we cover the Armed Forces Bowl between his Dukes and the Air Force Falcons.

I’m super excited about this series and the content we’ll be bringing to you over the next two weeks, but before I get too into that, we have business to take care of.

Every single weekday, the guys from Section 400 will be providing a rundown of everything that happened in sports the night before.

Let’s get into it.

Clap your hands, everybody.

Joel Embiid just dropped 51 points on the best defense in the NBA.

We’ve talked a decent amount about the Philadelphia 76ers and their perennial second-round exit status, but this team has every chance to be different.

Embiid is having the best season of his career, Tyrese Maxey is a star, Patrick Beverly has embraced the villain role without putting opposing players in a headlock, and Kelly Oubre survived a hit and run by the Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy.

In a year where it looked like the Eagles and Phillies would carry the “City of Brotherly Love”, the Sixers and Flyers are arguably the best two teams in the Cheesesteak capital of the world.

Wonderful Wildcats

Arizona Athletics

Right when it looked like last night’s college basketball spotlight would be stolen by a team of Pirates, a pair of Wildcats clawed it right back.

The Big East started conference play with a bang on Wednesday, with Seton Hall stunning Uconn in a 75-60 beatdown in New Jersey. Guard Kadary Richmond and forward Dre Davis combined for 40 points in the Pirates win, spoiling Huskies’ guard Cam Spencer’s return to the state he started his collegiate career in.

Shortly after Seton Hall (who is now on my NCAA Tournament radar) got an upset, fellow Big East team Villanova knocked off No. 12 ranked Creighton in Omaha.

Wildcats forward Eric Dixon single-handedly willed his squad to the upset victory, dropping in 32 of his teams 68 points.

As for Creighton, the Blue Jays have now dropped two in a row since I said they were on my short list of teams to win it all. The loss to UNLV was putrid, but the loss last night proved more that Villanova belonged than anything else.

The final game of the night showed us too things. 1) Arizona is still the best team in the country despite the loss to Purdue, and 2) Alabama may actually just not be very good.

Nate Oats’ team played an extremely difficult out of conference schedule, but was only able to win one game against a Power 5 team. They shot 5/35 from the 3-point line on Wednesday Night, proving they truly cannot win if the shots aren’t falling.

Arizona on the other hand proved they CAN win without playing their ideal game. Star guard Caleb Love had just 4 points through the games first 36 minutes but Pelle Larsson and Oumar Ballo were easily able to pick up the offensive slack.

The Wildcats are for real, and my favorite to cut down the nets in March.
