What to watch for tonight; January 10

It’s about time we got back into a routine here.

Every single weekday, the guys from Section 400 will take you through the upcoming slate of games, no matter how disgusting or great it looks.

Tonight’s slate is pretty solid, with an almost full night of college basketball and NBA action paired with some decent hockey.

Let’s get right into it.

The best.

Jay Biggerstaff-USA TODAY Sports
  • (NCAAB) Oklahoma vs. TCU
  • (NHL) Canadiens vs. Flyers

The biggest game of the night in college basketball comes to us at 9 PM eastern when the TCU Horned Frogs host the Oklahoma Sooners in a Big 12 matchup.

TCU may be the best unranked team in the country. Led by forward Emanuel Miller’s 16 points per game, the Horned Frogs can score in bunches and nearly just took down No. 2 ranked Kansas in Allen Field House.

Guards Michael Peavy and Jameer Nelson Jr. have struggled mightily from 3-point range, (24% combined) but if they can get it going this team is a sleeper in a loaded Big 12.

As for the Sooners, Otega Oweh and co. have been great to start the year but have yet to play great competition. Oklahoma’s lone loss this year came in blowout fashion at home against a good UNC team.

A win on the road tonight would go a long way towards their resume.

On the ice, the reeling Flyers host the 17-17-5 Canadians tonight. Philadelphia made headlines this week when they traded away top prospect Cutter Gauthier for a bag of chips and a used bus ticket after he was hesitant to sign long term with the team.

We’ll see how the Broad Street Bullies respond tonight.

The best of the rest.

Tennessee Athletics
  • (NCAAB) Tennessee vs. Mississippi State
  • (NCAAB) UCONN vs Xavier

The Mississippi State Bulldogs started off the season on fire. After making the tournament last year despite horrific offensive numbers, the Bulldogs seemingly figured out how to score in 2023-2024.

Unfortunately they have cooled off significantly at the wrong time.

Tonight they play host to an extremely talented Tennessee team that should win this game handedly (the spread being -2 is a joke).

I’ll need the Bulldogs to prove me wrong if I’m going to give them any respect for the rest of the season.

In the Big East, the defending champions travel to Ohio to take on Xavier. The Muskateers aren’t very good this year after losing Colby Jones to the NBA, but we’ll see if they can pull off a home upset.

The best of the rest.

USATS
  • (NCAAB) Rest of slate
  • (NBA) Full slate

Both the AP and Coach’s Polls this college basketball season have been more faded than a Hippie in Woodstock to start the season. It started with Michigan State being ranked a top-5 team to start the year. Then we got an inconsistency Villanova team consistently staying in the top 25.

Now, the Polls have absolutely no idea how to grade the SEC.

Arguably the third best team in the conference, the Auburn Tigers, weren’t ranked until last week. Ole Miss, who played 13 non-conference games against St. Mary’s School for the Blind, was a top-25 team before being molly-wapped by Tennessee at home to open the SEC season.

Tonight those Rebels play host to a Florida team that is CRIMINALLY underrated by both oddsmakers and the polls. Mark Clayton Jr. leads the team in scoring, but all other Gators starters average double figures.

Florida (-2) on the road tonight is the bet of the season.
