The NFL regular season is only a few days behind us but the league is in the midst of one of the biggest head coaching massacres in recent memory.
The Seattle Seahawks announced the firing of their longtime Super Bowl-winning head coach Pete Carroll on Wednesday afternoon, signaling a possible rebuild in the “Evergreen State”.
The 72-year-old was one of the few head coaches in NFL history that was able to make the transition from college football to the league. His 134 regular season wins rank first in Seahawks team history.
Carroll’s coaching days have seemingly ended as he’s accepted an advisory position with the Seahawks.
Seattle has now joined the Commanders, Falcons, Titans, Raiders, and Chargers as teams looking for a new head coach.
The Chargers and Raiders moved on from their respective leaders in the regular season, and Las Vegas may have already found their replacement with interim head coach Antonio Pierce.
Yesterday we saw Arthur Smith, Ron Rivera, and Mike Vrabel fired from their respective teams. While all three firings were somewhat expected, it was still surreal to see the latter completely fired almost immediately after the season ended.
Vrabel had been a great coach during his six seasons in Tennessee, compiling a 54-45 record and three AFC South division titles. The former New England Patriots linebacker has already been linked to the Pats as the next head coach if/when they move on from Hall of Famer Bill Belichick.
We’ll see if the Patriots are the next team to join the head coaching carousel in the coming days.
